Quantifying Each Habs Defenseman's Play in the Defensive-zone

By Kicks @Chrisboucher73

This post will focus on the defensive-zone play of each current Montreal Canadiens defenseman. Thanks to the micro-stats collected, we can determine the number of successful and unsuccessful plays with possession each player contributes per-minute of even-strength ice-time. We can also generate a report indicating the number of successful and unsuccessful defensive-plays per-minute played.
OFFENSIVE-TOUCHES (plays with possession)
This graph reflects how each Habs defenseman has performed while in possession of the puck in the defensive-zone. The higher the bubble, the more FAILED offensive-touches (plays with puck-possession) the player has produced. Expressed differently, the higher the bubble is, the more defensive-zone turnovers that player has produced per-minute played. The further to the right the bubble is, the more successful offensive-touches (plays with possession) the defenseman has contributed.
  • Douglas Murray, and Alexei Emelin have produced the most defensive-zone turnovers per-minute played. Josh Gorges, Francis Bouillon, and Raphael Diaz have produced the fewest d-zone turnovers per-minute.
  • PK Subban has produced the most successful offensive-touches per-minute, while Murray has produced the fewest.
  • In terms of success-rates, Subban has the highest defensive-zone puck-possession success-rate; followed by Gorges, and Diaz.
  • There's an obvious drop-off in d-zone puck-possession success-rate following Bouillon, as Murray's success-rate is nearly 5 percentage-points under Bouillon's

DEFENSIVE-TOUCHES (plays removing/acquiring possession)
This graph reflects how each Habs defenseman has performed defensively in the defensive-zone. The higher the bubble, the more FAILED defensive-touches (plays removing/acquiring possession) the player has produced. The further to the right the bubble is, the more successful defensive-touches the defenseman has contributed.
  • Murray has produced both the most successful, as well as the most failed defensive-touches per-minute played.
  • Emelin has produced the second-most failed defensive-touches per-minute played
  • Bouillon, and Gorges have produced the fewest FAILED defensive-touches per-minute, while Emelin and Subban have produced the fewest successful defensive-touches.
  • In terms of success-rates, Gorges has the highest defensive-zone defensive success-rate; followed by Bouillon.
  • Emelin's defensive success-rate in the d-zone shows some defensive-struggles, as his rating is over 5 percentage-points under any other Habs d-man
  • Outside of Gorges and Bouillon, no other Montreal d-man has a defensive success-rate above 70%.
