Quad core smartphones will be cheaper in 2013

A technology website, Digitimes reported that a few large Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE are planning to produce quad-core smartphones that may adopt MediaTek’s MT6589 or even Qualcomm’s MSM8x25Q chips before the Lunar New Year, which is essentially 10 days from now. The devices will be competitively priced at (Chinese Yuan) CNY 1,000 to 1,500 per unit, about US$160 to US$241/unit (RM487 to RM734).

The tech website also claimed that some tier-two or even tier-three brands may retail the devices below the CNY1,000/unit mark (Below RM487). Furthermore, according to the website, in 2013 quad-core smartphones will become more affordable and could be priced around the CNY1,000 a unit.

China-based makers believe the price fall for quad-core smartphones will be rapid in 2013, and soon prices will fall under CNY1,000/unit. China-based makers believe by the end of 2013, there will be quad-core smartphones with retail prices of US$100/unit.

Digitimes stated, “China-based makers believe the price fall for quad-core smartphones will be rapid in 2013, and soon prices will fall under CNY1,000/unit. China-based makers believe by the end of 2013, there will be quad-core smartphones with retail prices of US$100/unit.” (US$100 = RM304)

If what is reported here is true then everybody will be able to afford quad-core phones! and price for the “real budget smartphones” possibly be valued below US$100, perhaps US$50 to US$10! (RM30-RM150). This is indeed good news, KUDOS to Huawei and ZTE! and I wonder how would Apple and Samsung react with this news.
