Donald Trump (and the Republicans) are still trying to pass off their new tax law as benefitting mainly the middle class -- and Trump still claims he will not benefit from the plan (and neither will his rich friends). But the American people are not stupid enough to buy those lies.
The public is convinced that the new tax law benefits the rich the most. Only 21% thinks they will pay less under the new law, and only 27% thinks most Americans will pay less. But 53% says the rich will pay less and 52% says Donald Trump will pay less.
This does not bode well for the Republicans -- especially after the middle class sees how little they get and how much the rich get. And you can be sure that Democrats will be reminding them of that all the way up to November.
This same poll also asked if respondents thought Donald Trump should release his tax returns (as all other modern presidents and presidential candidates have done). Trump has said the public is not interested in his returns. As usual, he is WRONG. About 55% still wants his returns released, while only 28% say it's not necessary. And that feeling crosses gender, age, and racial lines.
These charts show numbers from a new Economist / YouGov Poll -- done between December 31st and January 2nd of a random national sample of 1,500 adults, with a 3 point margin of error.
