What is Proxmox VE?
Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE) is the leading platform for end-to-end industrial enterprise virtualization. From a central web interface, you can easily run virtual machines and containers, manage software-defined storage and networking, high-availability clustering, and many built-in out-of-the-box tools such as backup/restore, real-time migration, replication, and firewall.
Proxmox VE comes with all the necessary management tools, as well as an easy-to-manage web interface designed to manage hundreds or even thousands of virtual machines. It is also possible to manage the host through the command line.
The distribution has built-in tools for organizing virtual environment backups and clustering support available out of the box, including the ability to migrate virtual environments from one node to another without stopping work. Among the features of the web-interface: support for secure VNC-console; access control to all available objects (VM, storage, nodes, etc.) based on roles; support for various authentication mechanisms (MS ADS, LDAP, Linux PAM, Proxmox VE authentication).
It can act as a replacement for products such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix Hypervisor/XenServer, and Red Hat/Oracle Virtualization.
Facts:
Proxmox VE has a huge user base around the world with over 1,000,000 hosts (Note that a host is one unique external IP address on the Internet from which updates are downloaded, but behind one unique external IP address there can be one, ten and one hundred separate servers, which increases this figure at times). The virtualization platform has been translated into more than 26 languages. Using Proxmox VE as an alternative to proprietary virtualization management solutions, enterprises can centralize and modernize their IT infrastructure and turn it into a cost-effective and flexible software-defined data center based on the latest open source technologies.
Also, at the moment it is the only virtualization system in Ukraine that has been certified, has a positive expert opinion on compliance with the requirements of regulatory documents on VBI and is included in the list of VBI tools permitted by the SSISIS of Ukraine to ensure the technical protection of state information resources and information.

Proxmox Virtual Environment 7.4 (released March 23, 2023) includes many improvements. What are the new features?
Here is a selection of highlights:
- Synchronized with the Debian 11.6 package base ("Bullseye"), but using the newer Linux 5.15 kernel
- Allows you to optionally migrate to the Linux 6.2 kernel, which provides support for the current capabilities of the latest hardware.
- Updated QEMU 7.2, LXC 5.0.2, ZFS 2.1.9, Ceph Quincy 17.2.5, Ceph Pacific 16.2.11.
and much more....
- Improvements in the web interface:
- For the web interface and dark lovers, a fully integrated version of the Proxmox Dark theme is now available. The theme is based on the Crisp light theme. To determine if the user is requesting a light or dark color theme, the prefers-color-scheme CSS media feature is used. Through settings in the operating system or browser, users can specify their preferences. In addition, users can switch between color schemes manually in the web interface.
- The web interface and API provide detailed information about the Ceph OSD (Object Storage Daemon). This reduces the work of administrators, since they no longer need to collect the necessary information from different places.
- Enhanced options for editing jobs related to backup.
- Added support for adding local storage types hosted on other cluster nodes.
- The Add Storage Wizard for ZFS, LVM, and LVM-Thin storage has added a host selection interface.
- Continued development of the cluster resource scheduler (CRS, Cluster Resource Scheduling), which searches for new nodes needed to ensure high availability. The new version adds the ability to automatically rebalance virtual machines and containers at startup, and not just during recovery.
- A CRM command has been added to the High Availability Manager (HA Manager) to manually put an active node into maintenance mode without requiring a reboot. In preparation for the implementation of a dynamic load planning system in the cluster, the resources (CPU, memory) of various HA services (virtual machines, containers) were unified.
- ACL calculation has been redesigned and performance of access control rules has been significantly improved on systems with very large user counts or large ACLs.
Other Notable Improvements
- Task logs can be downloaded as text files directly from the GUI, making it easy to check later.
- Resource tree sorting: VMs or containers can now be sorted by their names or by VMID by selecting the appropriate sort order. Especially in large clusters, sorting all guests by name can provide a better overview for the users who depend on them.
- To avoid the "Connection reset" browser error, HTTP requests are automatically redirected to HTTPS. This will help avoid confusion, especially after setting up a Proxmox VE host for the first time.
- When users choose how information about Proxmox Backup Server storages will be displayed, they can use columns for encryption and verification status for sorting.
- Containers: The open source architectures riscv32 and riscv64 can be used for LXC containers. Also, some container templates for amd64 have been updated to newer versions.
- Virtual Machines: Renaming the "Bulk Stop" action to "Bulk Shutdown" reflects the actual behavior of this action.
- HA Manager: In preparation for dynamic load planning in clusters, the high availability manager abstracts and unifies the required resources (CPU, memory) for various HA services (containers, virtual machines).
- Improved Proxmox VE cluster management: Proxmox Offline Mirror now supports using an HTTP proxy to receive updates.
- Storage: With the content-dirs option, you can override specific subdirectories for content types - e.g. isos, container templates, backups, guest drives - with custom values.
- Access Control: With the refactoring of ACL calculations, performance has been greatly improved-up to 450x-on systems with large record counts, large user bases, or large numbers of access control rules.
- Notifications for new package updates can be disabled, further improving administration.
- Installing from an (image) ISO: UTC timezone can be selected during installation, making it easier to synchronize hosts or clusters spread over multiple geographic locations.
- Localization (i10n): Improved translations for Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Slovenian and Traditional Chinese.
Upgrading the distribution from older versions of Proxmox VE is possible via APT. You can also install Proxmox VE on top of Debian.
