Providing jobs to immigrants in 2021According to the release, provinces and territories in Canada can “request that a PNP application be placed on hold in circumstances where an applicant has sustained a job loss in Canada as a result of the pandemic” from September 17, 2020 to November 17, 2020. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada [IRCC] has implemented a temporary solution to give applicants more time to find new jobs.

Giving PNP applicants who lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic a second chance, paper-based PNP applications can be put on hold if a candidate no longer has a legitimate job offer, as long as their applications were received before March 18, 2020.

These applications will be put on hold until March 17, 2021, or until a fresh employment offer is received, as well as assurance from the province or territory that they will continue to support the nomination. Whichever of these two possibilities occurs first will be used.

The nominating province or territory is responsible for informing the applicant that their PNP application has been put on hold by IRCC.

Once the province or territory has submitted a request for their application to be put on hold, IRCC will contact the applicant via email with advice on how to provide further paperwork.

The applicant must make a request for the PNP application to be put on hold through the province or territory that is sponsoring their nomination.

A provincial nominee is expected to keep their employment offer throughout the application process under normal circumstances. Another of IRCC's interim measures aimed at reducing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Canadian immigration is the latest facilitative measure.

A record 74,150 Invitations to Apply [ITAs] have been issued so far in 2020, demonstrating Canada's commitment to accepting a high number of immigrants in the following years. This is an increase over the amount of ITAs issued at the same time last year.
