Rev. Fr. Jeewantha Peiris has filed a fundamental rights (FR) petition in the Supreme Court, seeking an order to prevent his arrest over the Galle Face protest incidents.

The petition says that Rev.Fr.Jeewantha Peiris joined the “GotaGoGama” protest from about April 9 and thereafter he became an active participant in the protest to bring justice to the people who were made to suffer by the Government led by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Rev. Fr. Jeewantha Peiris states that the respondents of the petition are trying to arrest him without a justifiable reason.

The petition has cited eight persons including Balangoda OIC Chief Inspector Damith Jayakody, Sub Inspector Pushpakumara, Western Province Senior DIG Deshbandu Tennakoon, IGP C.D Wickramaratne, Army Commander Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Upul De Silva, Air Force Commander Air Marshall Sudharshana Pathirana and the Attorney General as the respondents.

The petition was filed through Attorneys Namal Karunaratne and Udara Muhandiramge. Petitioner Rev.Fr. Peiris seeks and order declaring that his fundamental rights guaranteed to the petitioner under Articles 12(1), and or 13(1) and or 13(2) and or 14(1)(a) and or 14(1)(b) and or 14(1)(c) and or 14(1)(g) of the Constitution are being violated, and to issue an order preventing him from being arrested.
