The Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) President Gemunu Wijerathne said private buses will operate as usual

to make sure that the traveling public is not to be inconvenienced by the scheduled Trade Union (TU) action today. He said that members of various trade unions and professional associations have planned to strike nationwide on March 1 to protest a recent hike in personal income tax, private bus associations have decided to operate all the buses as usual.

“Workers in the public sector will get their salary even if they are engaged in a strike. But, we the private sector won’t get paid if we strike. They were all paid during the pandemic even without working. But, employees in the private sector and private bus service received half of their wages or no payment at all. Therefore, we have to earn for living and also for paying lease installments,” he said. He said that 25 percent of the total fleet’s lease payments are due and leasing agencies are attempting to seize nearly 3,000 buses for not paying up due installments.
