Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Must Deliver More Compelling Content to Receive Their $50 Million from Netflix

In January 2020, The duke and duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, decided to step back as senior members of the British royal family and become financially independent. Their decision was followed by a deal they struck with Netflix worth $100 million.

The Harry & Meghan docu series that documents Harry and Meghan’s courtship till their exit from the Royal Palace, was a huge success. Netflix made a good amount of money from it. But apparently, Harry and Meghan haven’t earned their keep yet. Their deal is under review and Netflix wants more content from the ex-royals  before they can receive the remaining $50 million ($40 million according to a different source

According to an insider source, “Netflix was pleased to sign Harry and Meghan and is looking for some great ideas going forward.” And “the remainder of the deal relies on them producing those good ideas. The deal’s continually under review which is normal for ones of this magnitude.

While Prince Harry’s Heart of Invictus docu series is set to release in August, Meghan Markle’s historical animated series Pearl has been canceled mid-production. Netflix clearly wants more ‘watercooler stories’. And you cannot blame them either. Harry’s Live to Lead docuseries about influential newsmakers sort of tanked.

At this point, the people are still interested in stories relating to the royal household – controversies, and whatnot, but the ex-royals are finding it hard to garner their interest in other things. The problem, as a Netflix executive puts it, is that “the lemon has been fully squeezed” as far as the royal family is concerned. So now, Harry and Meghan are under pressure to come up with new compelling content, quickly. Or they can bid goodbye to the rest of the deal.
