Archbishop Pietro Parolin, who will be the No. 2 in the Roman Catholic church when be becomes secretary of state next month, declared that priestly vow of celibacy derived from an age-old rule but was not Catholic dogma.

Adviser to Vatican calls for married priests to help save Church ‘tainted by scandal.

A leading Roman Catholic academic who is an adviser to the Vatican is calling on the Church to allow priests to be married.

John Haldane, Professor of Philosophy at the University of St Andrews, says that the Church is in decline and tainted by the child abuse scandal which, with the recent revelations about Jimmy Savile, has now stretched to the Catholic laity as well as the clergy.

Pope’s right hand man says priests may be allowed to marry and says celibacy is ‘tradition, rather than law’.

Pope Francis has been making waves in the Church with his forward-thinking approach and has made a series of comments to suggest that he is in favour of shaking up some age-old traditions.

Soon after being becoming Pope he called for a ‘poor Church for the poor’.

He also said he wanted to boost the role of women in the Church and proposed a more tolerant stance on homosexuality, stating: ‘Who am I to judge?’

And before he took office he gave an interview in which he said: ‘For the moment, I am in favour of maintaining celibacy; with all its pros and cons…It is a matter of discipline, not of faith. It can change.

‘Personally, it never crossed my mind to marry,’ the Pope said.

Hopefully they do it just to let them live a “normal” life and also to save young children.
