Here’s a fantastic movie about history that no one will ever watch. I shouldn’t say no one, because the film did make a very tiny amount at the box office, and managed a Golden Globe nomination. But, Oscar will forget this film. Sadly. It’s a fantastic film, easily one of the best of the year. It’s full of heart, great characters, and memorable performances. The problem is, the performances are from actors you probably have never heard of, and the Oscar race is a very political thing that rewards more well known actors over unknowns (not always, but frequently).
Pride is about a group of gays and lesbians who stand up and fight for a group of striking miners. Some of the miners reject the idea, because gays and lesbians are gross and immoral. Of course, this is a very uplifting movie, so everyone learns to get along in the end.
The film is exceptionally well written, and performed by an ensemble cast. It reminds me a lot of British imports like The Full Monty and Waking Ned Devine. Honestly, it falls just out of my Top 10 for the year, but I think I would still find something to nominate it for at the Oscars. It deserves to be watched and remembered.
