The Presidential Election will be held on September 21, 2024 and nominations of candidates will be accepted on August 15, 2024.
A special gazette was issued by the Election Commission yesterday (26) in terms of the powers vested in the Election Commission by the Presidential Elections Act No. 15 Section 2 of 1981 read with Article 104 B of the Constitution to notify the date for holding the poll for the Presidential Election, the date of nomination of candidates for the Election of the President and the place of nomination of candidates for the Presidential Election.
Accordingly, the office of the Election Commission situated at Sarana Mawatha, Rajagiriya has been declared as the place of nomination of candidates for the Presidential Election.
The term of the incumbent President expires on November 17,2024 and the poll for the election of the President shall be taken not less than one month and not more than two months before the expiration of the term of office of the incumbent President, according to Article 31 (3) of the Constitution.
Another gazette was issued by the Election Commission yesterday to notify details on depositing bonds by candidates for the Presidential Election 2024. Accordingly, in terms of the powers vested in the Election Commission by the Presidential Elections Act No. 15 Section 8 of 1981, candidates can deposit bonds for the Presidential Election from July 26 until August 14 on working days (excluding Saturdays and Sundays) from 8.30 am to 4.15 pm and on August 14 which is the day prior to the date of nomination of candidates from 8.30 am until 12 noon, the Election Commission announced.
Accordingly, in case the candidate is nominated by a recognized political party, Rs.50,000 and in the event that the candidate is nominated by another political party or by a registered voter, Rs. 75,000 should be deposited as a security bond at the office of the Election Commission in Rajagiriya by the candidate or by a person on behalf of the candidate to the Election Commission or to a person that the Election Commission has authorized.
