Presidential Advisor on Climate Change Attends Africa Climate Summit

Special Advisor on Climate Change to the President of Sri Lanka, Ruwan Wijewardene yesterday arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, to attend the Africa Climate Summit (ACS), on behalf of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The ACS serves as a crucial platform for discussions and collaborations aimed at addressing climate change challenges on the African continent and globally. Sri Lanka highly values the opportunity to engage in such important discussions and share our commitment to climate action.

Sri Lanka”s valuable contribution to the discussions and strengthen the bonds of cooperation between Sri Lanka and Kenya in the context of climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. Twenty Heads of States across the globe are expected to attend the summit. The United Nations Secretary- General Antonio Gutteres , World Bank Managing Director Axel van Trotsenburg and European Union President Ursula von der Leyen are among the high profile dignitaries expected to attend today’s summit .

This summit, coming after the Paris summit where greater clarity emerged, will be a critical opportunity to accelerate the global energy transition and deliver solutions to the COP28 in Dubai.

High Commissioner Kananathan said, “Our President’s close relationship with Kenyan President Ruto has played a pivotal role in fostering cooperation and collaboration between the two nations and look forward to meaningful engagements during the ACS. Kananathan further said that President Wickramesinghe’s vision has shown a strong commitment to promoting green energy and sustainable environmental practices and, under his leadership, Sri Lanka has embarked on several initiatives and policies aimed at advancing green energy production, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and fostering a sustainable future.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s commitment to green energy and environmental sustainability reflects his vision for a cleaner and more sustainable Sri Lanka. Through a combination of investments, policies, and international collaborations, Our President has made significant strides in promoting renewable energy and mitigating climate change. These efforts not only benefit Sri Lanka but also contribute to global efforts to combat environmental challenges. President Ruto’s invitation underscores the recognition of Sri Lanka’s commitment to environmental conservation and climate action, as well as the potential for fruitful cooperation in addressing climate challenges.
