The President and the Prime Minister should immediately step down to stop the country from sliding into an anarchic state and a pool of blood, former President Maithripala Sirisena said in a special statement yesterday (13).

Sirisena pointed out that a tragedy that has never happened in the history of Sri Lanka is happening in this country at the moment. Sirisena noted that a few persons hungry for power are working to completely destroy the country.

Sirisena observed, “Governance is about ensuring the safety of the people and the security of the country. Asserting one’s personal power is not the solution to the pressing problems of the people of the country. In the history of Sri Lanka, the politicians who behaved like fanatics for the sake of power have always led to the destruction of the country.”

Sirisena furthered, “I curtailed that Presidential power in 2015 when the 18th constitutional amendment acquired the president powers similar to a king. In 2019, this country was led to destruction by consolidating that power to the executive president again. Imposing emergency law to suppress the people engaged in the democratic agitation and imposing curfew only in the Western Province is a shameless short-sighted move taken to suppress justice. I strongly condemn this.”

Sirisena also stated, “The situation that has arisen today in the country is clearly the situation that I predicted at an earlier time. It is the responsibility of the military forces at this moment to protect the people of the country and the people who are engaged in the struggle. I also request the three armed forces commanders and the Inspector General of Police in this country not to attack the youth engaged in the unarmed struggle and not to respond to the real people’s protest with weapons.”

“I emphasize that the current President and the acting President have no real mandate at all. I request them to think twice while executing the orders they give. I also request all the people to accept state property as the property of the common people. I hope that the President and the Prime Minister will resign from their positions and bow down to the demand of the common people without taking the country to the abyss day by day. I strongly urge the rulers to keep in mind that greed for power is only short lived.” the former President also said.
