Chief Opposition Whip Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Lakshman Kiriella said Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa is not willing to accept the Premiership unless incumbent President Gotabaya Rajapaksa steps down.
Addressing a press briefing in Colombo, the Chief Government Whip said everybody knows that the country cannot go forward without a Prime Minister and a Cabinet of Ministers and therefore the SJB leader is willing to serve as the Premier at this crucial situation under any President other than the present President who has no mandate from the people in the country.
“President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has lost the confidence of the international community, especially following the recent developments that took place at Galle Face Green in Colombo where a group of organized armed thugs and hooligans attacked unarmed people who were engaged in a peaceful demonstration,” he said.
He said it was pity to say even the President was unable to stop these ugly unlawful activities that took place all over the country soon after the incident on Monday and as a result several people lost their lives and the properties of Government minister and other Parliamentarians were also burnt down by uncontrolled vandals.
Kiriella also said the SJB has already handed over two No-Confidence-Motions (NCMs) to the Speaker urging both the President and the Prime Minister to resign from the office.
“As the Prime Minister has already resigned the NCM against the President will be taken up in Parliament next week,” he said.
Kiriella further said this nature of communal troubles have tarnished the Sri Lankan image within the international arena and therefore once again we urge the President to step down from office without creating more troubles further.
