Powerful Marketing Strategy with Tumblr

So you have a new business or company, or even an existing one that you’re trying to promote a little more. You have a website set up, but it’s not generating a lot of traffic by itself. You’ve heard of tumblr and of other businesses gaining marketing success by using it. But what is this website, and how can it be used to your advantage in business? Simply put, Tumblr is a blog site. Similar to other blogging sites, tumblr allows a user to post text, quotes, conversations, pictures, video, and even audio on their blog, and it is broadcasted to their followers on a “dashboard” of posts. However, tumblr is unique in that it allows other users to “reblog” your posts. This means that one of your followers is able to take your post, and post it onto their blog, and it links back to yours. So, at that point, your post is shown to your followers AND that user’s followers.

So how can you use this site to market your product? Well, the answer is easy. Post! Let’s say, for example, that you run a business that specializes in making dresses for young women, you could post pictures of models wearing your dresses. Tumblr posts are largely comprised of images, as many people simply scroll past text posts. An image grabs attention and commands a user to pay attention to your product, and a visual representation of your product is the fastest way for a customer to draw an idea about what you’re selling.

As mentioned before, followers are important on tumblr. But how do you get them? It’s not as easy as simply uploading pictures onto your account and hoping that somebody stumbles upon them. You have to get active on the site. Connect with other blogs that have a similar theme to your own. To use the example from earlier, a business that makes dresses could follow fashion blogs or other businesses that create clothing. It’s important to create a relationship with fellow bloggers so that they will share your content, and in doing that, they will help generate followers for you. And usually, people that you follow will follow you back. Every single follower counts when you’re trying to generate business for a company through tumblr.

Another good way to generate traffic to your blog is to “tag” your posts. Every time that you create a post, you have the option of adding tags so that other people can easily see what you’ve posted. The more tags you add, the more people that will see your post.

So, an image of a model wearing a dress could be tagged with the following tags:
Fashion
Dress
Clothes
Cute
Design
Other users can type those into the search feature and browse the posts that have been tagged with those words, and they will see your post.

One important thing to do when using tumblr for marketing is to create an attractive blog. A product in real life generally has attractive packaging that draws the consumer in. The same concept is to be applied with your blog. You will want a blog with a nice background and layout that doesn’t distract from the content. If a blog is scattered, a potential customer might become frustrated or confused and click away without viewing your content. As mentioned earlier, visual representation is a huge part of marketing on tumblr. It is the virtual packaging of your product.

The best thing about using tumblr for selling or advertising is that you can add a link right to your post. If a user likes the product they see in your post, they may be interested in buying. And by adding a link below, they will be able to travel directly to your site to order your product.

Tumblr is really a great way to generate business for your company. With billions of hits every month and millions of users, you will be sure to gain some attention for your product. With a little bit of practice and making connections, you can become an expert in marketing in a whole new way!
