Beja is the capital of the District of Beja in the heart of the Alentejo Region, landmarked by its 13th century castle perched above the local landscape. We passed through Beja on our road trip through southern Portugal last September, and it’s worth noting here that Beja is the hottest district capital in the country. With temperatures averaging 30-33C from June to September (record highs of 45C in those months), you may want to go in May or October, when it averages a comfortable 23-24C.
We spent most of our visit at the well-preserved castle, which has the highest fortified tower in Portugal (Torre de Menagem, 40m), built of granite and marble. You can visit the keep and walk the castle walls for panoramic views of the town and countryside. Highly recommended!
