If you’re looking for day-tripping options from Porto, a place worth plugging into your GPS is the Romanesque town of Amarante, 60km to the east. Like other interesting towns in Portugal, there’s a river running through the middle (the Tâmega) and it has local folklore (Gonçalo’s tomb bringing luck). I’ve written about it here:
