Portugal Day 2017: Portuguese Armed Forces On Display In Porto

We’re still a few days away from Portugal Day on June 10, officially Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas (Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities), but the Portuguese Armed Forces have already taken over Avenida dos Aliados for demonstrations by the Navy, Army, and Air Force. At the moment, the avenue between City Hall and Rua dos Clérigos looks like a parking lot for tents, tanks, an F-16, and helicopters. The Forças Armadas have been setting up since the weekend and the demonstrations begin tomorrow, starting with a speech from the Mayor of Porto at 10:30.

I wanted to post these pictures now because we won’t be in Portugal for Portugal Day (we are usually traveling during the national holiday), so this is a little mid-installation preview. There are even a few pictures of tourists taking selfies with soldiers, which is a reminder that it’s peaceful here in Portugal and that is worth celebrating every day of the year.
