Most of the street art photos in my Porto collection are taken by phone enroute to an appointment, posted to Instagram, shared with Tumblr and Flickr, then mixed in with the DSLR pics in Pinterest. It’s a mess.
Both Instagram and Pinterest are ordered chronologically and have no sorting method; Pinterest has boards but are still chrono within each board. Half the time I forget where I took a picture (I don’t leave GPS on) and need to retrace my steps on a map. Once in a while I have a DSLR with me to capture it properly.
I’ve been trying to figure out a better system for cataloguing all this street art, but so far I’ve just been posting it as soon as I can (before all memory of where drops out of my head), tagging the artist, and labelling it with the street and parish (Porto’s demarcated neighbourhoods that have been rolled up into the long name of Cedofeita, Santo Ildefonso, Sé, Miragaia, São Nicolau e Vitória as of 2013). As you can imagine, this can feel very onerous since I have to look up almost everything, but the bonus is that I’m getting pretty good at recognizing the street artist by the artwork and I’m also memorizing the parish borders.
I shot all of these pictures between February 22 and March 8. More photos in the Winter 2015/2016 album.
