Porto In Black and White

Once in a while, it’s a good idea to view a familiar environment in new ways in order to appreciate it, to notice new details, and to interact with it differently. For a photographer, an easy shift in perspective can be as simple as editing in black and white instead of colour.

I decided to edit all the pictures for this post in black and white as many of these views have become well-known to me — so well-known that I can recognize Porto within a second of seeing a photo of these places online. But to see them from a new angle, such as last week at Muralha Fernandina or from Silo Auto or from the top of Clérigos Tower, adds a whole new dimension — like finding out a friend can play the piano or sing all the verses of Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s exciting!

On a somewhat analogous note, this post has been in limbo while I’ve been trying to iron out some technical problems on this website. I’ve lost a few hairs over it (hopefully just the grey ones) and there’s been one particular recurring problem plaguing the back end of this website for MONTHS and I haven’t been able to figure it out. In the process of solving another problem (I suddenly couldn’t upload any images), I believe I have solved the longstanding problem… I hope I haven’t jinxed myself just now by saying it’s been solved. If indeed it has, this is REALLY exciting!
