Ponzi Supernova by Steve Fishman

By Pamelascott

To find out how the greatest financial fraud in history imploded, journalist Steve Fishman tracks down the victims, the federal investigators, the accomplices, and the mastermind, Bernie Madoff himself.

Ponzi Supernova takes listeners through the calculated lies, frantic hi-jinks, and lax financial oversight that ultimately weaponised a Ponzi scheme into a $65 billion destructive force that reached across the globe and still has lasting effects today.

I found Ponzi Supernova riveting at times but it already greatly annoyed me. I had no sympathy for Bernie Madoff or anyone involved in his business. Bernie comes across as an awful person, someone with a god-complex who thinks he is above everyone and every law. He shows no real remorse for his crimes. He says he's sorry when prompted but then goes on to try and blame everyone else. I also felt little sympathy for his alleged 'victims'. Some ordinary people were conned and they have my sympathy. Many of his clients were stinking rich and losing their millions barely dented their life. Excuse me while I don't shed a tear. Boo hoo! This show is enjoyable for its insight into how Madoff got away with it for decades because bankers and investors sensed something rotten was going on but turned a blind eye. The final episode, Something Fishy was the best as it focuses on someone considering investing in one of Madoff's products for her clients who is suspicious and refusals to answer her basic questions just arouses them more. In the financial world, if something looks too good to be true it likely is.
