The Câmara Municipal de Matosinhos has a small list of historic bridges around the municipality, and today between rain showers (and bursts of sleet) we visited two of them.
The second one is the subject of this post: Ponte do Carro (Car Bridge) over the Leça River, between Santa Cruz do Bispo and Guifões. It’s been classified a property of public interest since 1971, a fine example of medieval architecture in a civil structure. The area is a little hideaway that’s unseen from any major roads, stretches of lush greenery alongside the Leça River with two crossings — Ponte do Carro and a little footbridge closer to what looks like a former mill. There are a few stone picnic tables here and there, inviting us to return in the warmer months with food, drinks, and friends. We will!
