The Colombo Crimes Division said on Thursday that they had to shoot in the air to control an attempt made by a group of people who came to free a person who had been arrested on suspicion near the Sinhapura Stadium in Kolonnawa.
A special team of police officers led by a police inspector had arrested a suspect during an operation in Sinhapura Kolonnawa on March 30 night.
A 44-year-old resident of G.B.Perera Mawatha Kolonnawa has been arrested. The Colombo Crimes Division said that the relatives and neighbours of the person had protested against the police and tried to free the suspect.
The police inspector, who was the leading this team of police officers had fired his firearm in the air and dispersed the group and brought the arrested suspect to the Colombo Crimes Division.
A senior officer of the Colombo Crimes Division stated yesterday (31) that investigations are ongoing regarding the suspect who was arrested and so far it has not been revealed that he is involved in crimes.
