Hello and welcome to our Pokémon X&Y Gym Guide! Every Friday we will be guiding you through one of the eight Kalos Region Gyms in Pokémon X and Y, showing you everything you need to know to beat them all and get your badges. We will show you how to find the gyms, what Pokémon they have and how you can defeat them, and even where to head next!

This week, we are looking at the fourth Gym in Courmaline City with Gym Leader Ramos. If you are reading this guide, you should have already beaten  X & Y’s first three gym leaders, Viola, Grant and Korrina. If not, check out these guides to Santalune City Gym, Cyllage City Gym and Shalour City Gym to raise your Pokémon team and get your first gym badges before challenging the leader of the Courmaline City, Ramos!

Gym Type

While this gym has a water based name and is near water, don’t be fooled: it is actually a Grass type gym. This should be pretty easy for you at this stage in the game, as Grass Pokémon are weak to five different types of Pokémon. These are Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug types. The only Pokémon that are weak against Grass types are Water, Ground, and Rock types. Grass types are also resistant to Water, Electric, Grass, and Ground moves, so make sure not to use these attacks in battle.

How to find The Gym

The journey from Shalour City and Korrina to the next city is a short one. You just need to go through route 12 Fourrage Road and you will end up in Courmarine City. You must then ride the monorail to reach Coumarine City Gym.

Ramos’ gym is a giant adventure treehouse which is pretty cool as you have to climb or swing on ropes to get through it. However it has various routes up which you must get to by climbing ropes or vines. Some of these lead to dead ends, and some with Pokémon trainers. To get to Ramos, you will need to defeat his four followers who are Pokérangers, all dressed in matching uniforms. These are Pokemon Ranger Chaise, Pokemon Ranger Brooke, Pokemon Ranger Twiggy, and Pokemon Ranger Maurice.

Ramos

When you enter the gym, there is a vine for you to climb on to go toward the top of the gym’s tower. Stand on the footprint spots on the ground below the vine and press the A button to grab onto it. You’ll automatically climb up.

Trainers in the Gym

Pokémon Ranger Chaise

After climbing the first vine, don’t take the path to the left as it leads to a dead end. Instead take the path to the right, stand on the footprints and press A to swing across another vine, where Pokémon Ranger Chaise is waiting for you.

After the battle, next you must climb up the vine near the Pokémon Ranger you just battled and head left until you reach another vine. Press A again to swing across it. Climb up to the level above to find three different paths you can take. Don’t take the vine to the next level as it leads to a dead end. The vine to the right is optional as it leads to another dead end, but it also has a Pokémon Ranger, and the rope to the left leads to the rest of the Gym. Pokémon Ranger Maurice is the trainer to the right if you chose that direction, which we recommend to get some easy points to level up your Pokémon.

How to defeat Ramos

As this gym is mainly a Grass gym, if you have a Flying, Fire, Bug, Poison or Ice type you will defeat most of the Pokémon easily. This means you have a lot of options for what team to chose to take into battle, so let your imagine run wild with this one!

However, if you are looking for help, Ramos uses three Grass-type Pokemon, two of which are dual types, so we suggest going for a Fire or Flying type, or even a dual Fire and Flying type, as these will quickly defeat not only Ramos but all of the Pokémon in the gym. Ice-type attacks also come in handy here, as they deal twice the damage to all three of the Gym Leader’s Pokemon, and does four times the damage to Jumpluff! So if you picked Amura as your fossil Pokémon he will be great in the final battle.

Charizard

If you chose a Charmander from Professor Sycamore as we suggested in our 10 Best Pokémon to catch in Pokémon X and Y feature, you will easily blast your way through all of the trainer in this gym with Mega Charizard. Even a simple fire type move such as Ember will have you sorted. If you haven’t been to Professor Sycamore yet, check out the link to see where and how to add a Charmander to your team.

Delph

If you chose Fennekin as your starter Pokémon and it has fully evolved into Delphox, this gym will also be easy to handle will it’s fire type moves.

Talonfalme

Dual types are also great Pokémon to have on your team here as they have twice the advantage, such as the dual flying and fire type Talonflame. Talonflame is a particularly useful Pokémon as it has the ability flame body, which has a 30% chance to inflict burn status on an enemy if it directly attacks Talonflame, and with dual fire and flying attacks like peck and ember you will defeat those grass Pokémon in no time at all!

Tips: Watch out because Ramos does make use of Potions, sometimes twice on one Pokémon, but even with that, this gym should be an easy one for you.

Reward

Raaa

After defeating Ramos, he will reward you with two items, the Plant Badge and TM86 Grass Knot and P 5,440 in cash. Grass Knot is a move that snares its foe with grass, dealing more damage depending on the weight of the foe. The greatest gift he gives you though is the Plant Badge, which not only allows Pokemon up to Level 60 to obey you, even Pokemon you get in trades, but also gives you the ability to finally use Fly outside of battle. This means you can now quickly return to anywhere you have been, and makes it easy for you to go back to Pokémon Centers to heal your Pokémon if you run into trouble.

Where to go next

RAmmm

After defeating Ramos he will open a gate that gives you a shortcut to the entrance of the gym. Just walk onto the slide and you’ll be at the entrance in no time.

You now have two choices. Now that you can fly, you can take some time to go back and collect missed items or Pokémon trainers hidden behind trees before you had the ability cut, or you can head south from the gym to continue your adventure.

When you are ready to continue, head south from the Coumarine Gym and you will run into Lysandre who will give you a strange item ‘Holo Clip’ whilst urging you to use Mega Evolution to make the world a better place. Continue going south and you will come across a gate that leads you to Route 13: Lumiose Badlands. Here you’ll meet Sina and Dexio, who’ll update your Pokédex by giving you the Mountain Kalos Pokédex. Continue on Route 13 to Kalos Power Plant where a mystery awaits you.
