I was contacted regarding a new project in Beirut aiming at displaying and encouraging local designers in addition to others from Middle Est and Africa. The gallery or design station as they like to call it is a lovely concept allowing rising designers to show their work all in a friendly environment where people can mingle over coffee and cake. In addition to that, Platform 39 will be organizing workshops related to the world of design. Below are images and details provided by Platform 39.
The above chair is among my favorite pieces.
'Platform 39 is a newly opened design station in Beirut. It features an eclectic mix of furniture, home and lifestyle accessories that are mainly the creations of designers from the Middle East & Africa. These items explore the diverse materials, textures and production techniques of contemporary design alongside revisited ancestral materials, patterns and practices. Our 325 square meter space has been designed in order to give the feel of a train station to its visitors.
We feature designers such as Khalid Shafar (UAE – www.khalidshafar.com), White sur White (Lebanon – www.whitesurwhite.com), Dar en Art (France/Morocco www.darenart.com), &CAIRO (Egypt – www.andcairo.com), Santimetre (Turkey – www.mosantimetre.com), BOBOBOOM (France/Lebanon – www.boboboom.com), etc.'
'In parallel, and aiming to encourage and promote the design industry in the region, the space stages occasional curated exhibition dedicated to MENA’s designers as well as host/organize thematic workshops and related events in its “WagonLab”.'
