The A.A's first offices in Fleet Street…
#plaque366 The A.A
Not so very long ago, if I’d presented you with the fact that the A.A was founded in Fleet Street, you probably would have replied that Alcoholics Anonymous had found their spiritual home given the booze consumption of the old journos of that fabled street.
The A.A in question here, however, is the Automobile Association.
In 1903 the Motor Car Act came onto being – introducing a raft of motoring offences such as speeding. The A.A was founded in response to give “moral support” to motorists. One of their policies was to warn heavy-footed motorists of speed traps ahead on the road. This they did using bicycles.
A London Walk costs £10 – £8 concession. To join a London Walk, simply meet your guide at the designated tube station at the appointed time. Details of all London Walks can be found at www.walks.com.
