Nicknamed The Duchess of Jermyn Street - and dramatised as The Duchess of Duke Street – Rosa Lewis was born in East London and became one of the leading chefs of her day. Rumoured to have had an affair in the 1890s with the man who would become King Edward VII, she bought The Cavendish Hotel in 1902. The wording on the plaque is most revealing: she did not "run" or "operate" the Cavendish… she ruled.
