Songwriter Ivor Novello at Aldwych…
Born in Cardiff 1893, Ivor Novello's name is still invoked today when talk turns to great songwriting: the nation's most prestigious songwriting prize is named in his honor.
His first big hit was Keep The Home Fires Burning in 1914 – the sentiment of which, at the time of the First World War, wove Novello into the fabric of British popular culture. We'll Gather Lilacs is perhaps his most famous song – Novello's ashes are interred beneath a lilac bush at Golders Green Crematorium. But I've chosen his WWI classic to accompany this plaque. I truly believe that it has become one of the great English folk songs – and I delight not only in the song, but in the fact that it took a Welshman to compose it…
Novello's plaque is here…
With the launch of The Rolling Stones Walk on the 5th May 2016 and the return of the Rock'n'Roll London Pub walk on Wednesday nights from the 4th May 2016 the London Walks summer programme 2016 will feature no less than FIVE regular musical-themed walking tours.
To mark the occasion, April is Music Month on The Daily Constitutional!
A month of plaques, locations, facts, reviews and more lies ahead. And I'm compiling the Ultimate London Playlist – get in touch with your favorite London song or piece!
A London Walk costs £10 – £8 concession. To join a London Walk, simply meet your guide at the designated tube station at the appointed time. Details of all London Walks can be found at www.walks.com.
