Rhythm and Greens… Commemorating Benny Green in Cleveland Street W1
Today Jazz takes center stage, with the legendary Benny Green. Something of a polymath, Green was not only a well-regarded saxophonist, but a writer and journalist and radio presenter. His radio show focusing on the classics of the Great American Songbook became something of a cult and fans picketed the BBC when it was dropped from the airwaves. Quite right, too. Due to the outcry, the show was soon reinstated. A great all-round performer, Green spoke wittily at the funeral of fellow jazz legend Ronnie Scott in 1997.
Here's Green performing with Lord Rockingham's XI – the house band for Jack Good's early rock'n'roll TV show Oh Boy – on the daft but infectious novelty hit Hoots Mon. Green is the sax player in the dark shades…
Here's how to find Cleveland Street…
With the launch of The Rolling Stones Walk on the 5th May 2016 and the return of the Rock'n'Roll London Pub walk on Wednesday nights from the 4th May 2016 the London Walks summer programme 2016 will feature no less than FIVE regular musical-themed walking tours.
To mark the occasion, April is Music Month on The Daily Constitutional!
A month of plaques, locations, facts, reviews and more lies ahead. And I'm compiling the Ultimate London Playlist – get in touch with your favorite London song or piece!
