Commemorating: Anthony Ashley Cooper, Philanthropist at Harrow School
This chap has a much more famous memorial in is honor – at Piccadilly Circus. The statue of Eros, as we popularly know it, is actually the Shaftesbury Memorial and goes by the official name of The Angel of Christian Charity. It commemorates the philanthropic works of the Seventh Lord Shaftesbury.
The plaque on his old school at Harrow directs us to where his philanthropic journey actually began. Most of our London plaques are small discs upon which we have precious room for a life story, making do instead with short biographical details such as “Statesman” or “Inventor” or “Composer”.
Shaftesbury’s grand plaque at Harrow School has more space to tell of the formative episode in the life of young Shaftesbury.
