We saw Pizzagirl play the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading Festival the other week and his eclectic brand of electro-indie pop-meets-cabaret performer had the whole crowd dancing. Now he’s announced the release of the ‘season 2’ EP in November via Heist Hit Records (Her’s) and unveiled the opening jam, ‘Highschool’.
With a complete DIY aesthetic (songs are recorded in his bedroom studio known as The Beatzzeria; videos are filmed by his best mate; press shots are taken by Pizzamum…), the coming-of-age tale of ‘Highschool’ is inspired by ’80s high school movies where characters never fail to learn valuable life lessons. Taking influences from everyone from ’80s powerhouses like Phil Collins and Vince Clarke-era Depeche Mode to contemporary acts including Porches and St. Vincent’s poppier moments, ‘Highschool’ is full of groove as Pizzagirl ponders how he’s going to get the object of his affection and lets self-doubts about his status creep in:’Sometimes I think you think I’ve lost my cool’…
