When Google finally released the Pixel 4a earlier this month, we named it the company's best phone in years. Between its bright camera, solid performance, and fantastic display, the Pixel 4a has a lot going for it. But you might be wondering how much of an upgrade it is from its predecessor, the Pixel 3a. Fortunately, our own Gary Sims has the answer with his latest Speed Test G challenge.

Internally, the Pixel 4a has a Snapdragon 730G chipset with an Adreno 618 GPU. The Pixel 3a has a Snapdragon 670 and an Adreno 615 GPU. Just looking at these specs, you'd likely expect a difference in overall performance, but you might be shocked to find out how much faster the Pixel 4a is in benchmarks. The Pixel 4a completed the test suite 63 seconds before the Pixel 3a. The differences in performance between the two phones were especially noticeable in the 3D rendering portion of the test.

While you will likely notice a difference with gaming and other demanding applications, keep in mind that these may not be as strong in real-world use. When we tested the 3a last year, we found that the phone didn't feel much slower than more premium phones. If you need further guidance, check out our Pixel 4a Buying Guide.
