You may know the increasingly popular Pittsburgh MC Mac Miller as the happy-go-lucky, carefree rapper who debuted with his 2010 mixtape, K.I.D.S (aka Kicking Incredibly Dope S**t). The mixtape consisted of eighteen timeless hits with its most notable track being “Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza.” It captured the audience with a tasteful beat and laid back lyrics while contributing to his skyrocketing success in the music industry. Now, almost two years later, former MC, Lord Finesse has resurfaced and stated Miller sampled his original 1996 track without permission to create his own success. Finesse’s lawyers released a statement:
“ This is a case about a teenage rapper–Mac Miller–copying the music from a song written, produced and performed by Lord Finesse, a hip hop legend, changing the title and then distributing it under his own name in order to launch his music career,” states a complaint filed by Lord Finesse’s lawyers. The suit alleges “copyright infringement, unfair competition, unjust enrichment, interference, deceptive trade practices, and a number of related state law claims.”
On Monday, July 6, the legal ramifications hit hard and Miller, Rostrum Records, and the hosting site of the mixtape, DatPiff, are all being sued for $10 million over the hit. To add to the increasing tension, Finesse has also announced that he thinks Miller is trying to sabotage his legendary status by trying to drive his loyal fans away with this remake.
While there has been no official word from Miller’s people and he has been instructed to keep quite, Miller has instead addressed the situation via Twitter.
