Phoebe Bridgers has shared the video for ‘Garden Song’, her first new solo material since 2017’s phenomenal debut album ‘Stranger in the Alps’. In the years since, Phoebe has played shows all around the world and formed two extraordinary ‘side’ projects – boygenius with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker and Better Oblivion Community Center with Conor Oberst. The new single comes ahead of a busy year for Phoebe that includes shows supporting The 1975 across the States and an appearance at Latitude Festival.
The song itself finds Phoebe in a ‘Digital Ash’-era Bright Eyes mode with restrained electronica and confessional, powerful lyrics: ‘I grew up here ’til it all went up in flames except the notches in the door frame’. Phoebe sings about looking at reflections in the water, the garden being haunted and how it felt when she finally thought she knew what she wanted, although this is delivered with some doubt: ‘When I grow up I’m gonna look up from my phone and see my life. And it’s gonna be just like my recurring dream, I’m at the movies, I don’t remember what I’m seeing. The screen turns into a tidal wave’.
