This art piece “Phantom”, shown at the San Diego Air and Space Museum in 2008, is a 17-foot long model of a McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II jet fighter. This recycled hardware was rescued by artist Jean Wells from the graveyard at Gillespie Field and covered with brilliant red, silver and blue mirrored glass mosaic tiles. The aircraft represented by this patriotic livery was a U.S. Navy F-4J Phantom II from Air Development Squadron Four (VX-4).
