I took a little break to celebrate my anniversary and came back to a whole bunch of bad news. The Redskins lost in overtime to Dallas, the Supercommittee has failed to come to a budget agreement, and in the county, there have been murders, stabbings, robberies, and bad business. The whole DMV area seems to be infused with an extra dose of desperation. When car jackings start taking place at Tysons Corner and a white girl with a knife is the one doing the robbing, ladies and gentlemen: the DMV is officially in desperation mode.

No business has even applied for Governor O’Malley’s Fasttrack initiative, which allows businesses to fasttrack through the business licensing process. Maryland economic development officials cite a “sluggish real estate market” as the reason for the slow start but I cite a lack of A PLAN. Where is the plan for businesses to buy into? How about tricking out Suitland and making it a major downtown area? It has sidewalks, proximity to DC, subways, buses, and an old town feel to it. COME UP WITH A PLAN AND BUSINESSES WILL FOLLOW!
As result of the Supercommittee’s inability to do the jobs they were elected to do, the U.S. budget in general and the DMV budget will be hit hard. It’s projected that economic growth in this area will come to a stand still. “Places like Fairfax, D.C. and Arlington, where [defense spending] is more important, would feel it more than places that are more diversified.” Since Prince George’s County really wasn’t a player in the DMV projected economic growth map, our leaders need to be looking at how we can make the best out of these automated cuts that are a comin’.
