PGCo, Did You Know…

Prince George’s County officially endorses Greenbelt for FBI headquarters, Seat Pleasant home intruder shot and still on the loose, Hearing on a location for the new Regional Medical Center takes place TONIGHT!, State Senator Victor Ramirez says give illegal immigrants a driver’s license; Delegate Schulz says “nope.”

FBIheadquarters
County Executive Rushern Baker and County Council Chairwoman Andrea Harrison sent a letter to the U.S. General Services Administration extolling the virtues of the location’s transportation access and development opportunities,” The Examiner Reported.  I’m just hoping we aren’t coming off as “pressed,” in the words of my nieces and nephews.  We are not so hard pressed for a federal tenant that we will live, again, with another fortress like the Census Bureau in Suitland.  In the meantime, Loudon County has submitted EIGHT SIGHTS for consideration.  Wow.  From Virginia Business, “The sites are located on or near the future path of the Metrorail Silver Line, in an area that stretches west from Washington-Dulles International Airport to the last Loudoun Metro station in Ashburn.

“These greenfield sites offer the lowest cost per square foot, and the highest flexibility, of any sites under consideration for the new FBI headquarters,” Scott York, chairman of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, said in a statement.

Prince George's Gun Registry
I’m so glad that the officer was able to get a round off before the thief ran off from this home robbery attempt in Seat Pleasant.  And kudos to whoever saw what was happening and called the police in the first place. On February 27, 2013, at about 9:00 am IN THE MORNING, police received a 911 call to the 6900 block of Opal Place for a residential robbery in progress. When the police arrived, they found signs of forced entry so they surrounded the home.  An officer at the rear of the home was confronted by an armed suspect so she took a couple of shots at him; it is currently unknown if the thief sustained any injuries.  This suspect fled while another ran back inside the home, only to be arrested. Detectives are following strong leads in an effort to identify the suspect that fled.  Detectives recovered two firearms from the scene.  At this time, detectives are working to determine the total number of suspects involved.  A  preliminary investigation reveals the suspects entered the home with the intention of robbing the residents.  Detectives believe this was a targeted act of violence.

I’M SO GLAD THEY CAUGHT THIS ROBBERY IN PROGRESS!!!

Regional Medical Center Site Choices
Come out to discuss the specifics of location, funding, contracting & business opportunities for the County’s new Regional Medical Center.  Takes place at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex, 8001 Sheriff Road, Landover, starts at 6:30 p.m.  Washington Business Journal took a bit of a swipe at the meeting’s agenda, “Officials from County Executive Rushern Baker’s administration will — for one night — set aside other vexing questions about the hospital (e.g., How will they pay for it? Who will operate it? How will it be financially sustainable?) and focus on real estate at a public meeting.”  This is why I haven’t renewed my subscription to the Washington Business Journal yet.  Everything is hunky-dory-yes-and-amen when discussing Fairfax, Silver Spring, NoMa, et. al. but the slightest mention of Prince George’s County brings on too many below the belt swipes.  The proposed sites are Morgan Boulevard, Landover Mall, Woodmore Town Center, and Largo Town Center.  a .pdf image is HERE just in case you can’t see the map included in this post.

State Senator Victor Ramirez told WTOP,“If you live in Maryland you should be able to obtain a driver’s license,” says State Senator Victor Ramirez.  Ramirez is sponsoring the measure, asserting it would offer every driver more protection on the roadways and generate millions in additional fees.  “It would allow people to drive to work, to get insurance,” he says. “It’s a necessity.”

Maryland has outlawed providing undocumented residents new driver’s licenses since 2009, when the state altered its laws to conform with new, tighter federal regulations.  Under federal law, the licenses would be exclusively for driving.  “You cannot use it to get on an airplane,” explains Ramirez. “You cannot use it for federal purposes.”  That fact would be explicitly noted on the license itself.

The proposal has broad Democratic support but Republicans fear it could turn Maryland into a draw for new illegal residents.
