Hy-Vee issues voluntary recall of certain dog food products
Routine testing identifies higher-than-normal contaminant levels in select products
WEST DES MOINES, IA – Hy-Vee, Inc. today issued a voluntary recall of certain bags of Hy-Vee dog food due to elevated levels of a chemical contaminant commonly found in corn.

Pets which have consumed this product and exhibit symptoms of illness including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea should consultant a veterinarian.

Salmonella is the genus name of an organism that is a Gram-negative bacteria. The disease is called salmonellosis. Of the more than 2,000 Salmonella species, only a few cause disease in pet birds and parrots. Some infected pet birds show symptoms, but not all birds will. Signs of Salmonella contamination in pet birds include lethargy, fluffed up appearance and weight loss. Sick birds can transmit the bacteria to other birds and humans by contact and fecal contamination through the bird’s food and water. People who have handled contaminated products may become infected too.
