Personal Style

On a recent flight home from Houston, I read a book I found in the clearance bin at a local book store called The ELLEments of Personal Style. In it, each celebrity featured had something that distinctly made them different from the next. A visual aid was created to help the reader see what the celebrity’s style was all about. I began wondering what best described my personal style.

Personal Style

Silhouette Savvy: Christina Hendricks
On a lesson learned: “The key for me is tailoring and showing my waistline. I used to love these billowy, silky, romantic things. Finally, it was like, Okay, let other girls wear those. I’ve got to recognize what works for me.

Earthy Opulence: Alicia Keys
On her new look: “It’s feminine, tailored—highwaisted pants, sharp jackets. Jumpsuits! I don’t like to just do the safe thing. I still like to take a chance and have some fun.”

What makes me stand out? How can I describe my aesthetic in a few words when my aesthetic is constantly changing? One day I’m all rock glam and another day I’ll be preppy chic. What would my Pinterest style board look like?

Personally, I like the idea of my look transcending all trends.  I’ll incorporate bits and pieces of current trends and the result is something  of my own making. Adding pops of color, mixing textures, balancing hard and soft, it all depends on my mood. It’s my prerogative. The days of adhering to strict style rules are long, long gone.

My go-to look these days involves taking a great structured piece and pairing it with a bright spring-ready accessory. A little white dress is the new LBD. I paired mine with pink ankle strapped shoes and instantly made a menswear inspired look more girly, flirty and fun.
