Tools and Equipment You'll Need

How to Make Pear Gorgonzola Pizza

Recipe Ingredients & Notes

  • Whole wheat dough (or flatbread): Better than white flour pizza dough since it has whole grains and fiber!
  • Pears: Usually the pear & gorgonzola pizzas have like 6 thin slices of pear on them. I used 1.5 pears and sliced them super thin so they became gooey and melted into the cheese, but this increased the fiber of the pizza and more fruit is always good.
  • Cheese: A combination of fontina and gorgonzola give you that melted decadence with tons of flavor
  • Walnuts: I used 1/2 cup for healthy fats, fiber and protein.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1: Spread out your dough on a baking sheet. Lightly brush 1 tsp olive oil on the dough.

Step 2: Top with Fontina cheese and pear slices.

Step 3: Then add the Gorgonzola and Walnuts in that order.

Step 4: Bake in a 450 degree oven for 10-12 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and the crust is slightly golden. Serve warm!

What Makes This Pear Gorgonzola Pizza Healthy?

  • Healthy Fats: Walnuts are rich in healthy fats and are a great source of omega-6 fatty acids.
  • Protein and Fiber: A slice of pizza is going to give you 11 grams of protein and 3-4 grams of fiber! Working together, protein and fiber will keep you full.

Will Kids Enjoy This Pizza?

Yes, kids are going to gobble up every bite of this sweet and savory pear gorgonzola pizza. The only aversion could be the gorgonzola cheese. Some kids don't like the flavor of Gorgonzola cheese, and that is more than fine. If your kids are that way, maybe put a little bit less cheese gorgonzola cheese (or omit it on their half of the pizza) and add a bit more fontina cheese instead.

How to Store and Keep

Typically, we don't end up with leftover when we make this pizza because it is so good! But if you are looking to save some slices for the next day, let the pizza cool and then store in an airtight food storage container. Make sure the pieces are flat and evenly placed / separated with foil in the container. The pizza will keep in the refrigerator for three to four days.

Reheat the pizza slices in the microwave for one minute (place on a microwave safe plate with a paper towel on top). Or if you want a more crispy crust, you can heat it in the oven at 350° for 8 to 10 minutes or until it is hot.

Gorgonzola Pizza Variations

  • Caramelized Onions: Add some caramelized onions to the top of the pizza - they go wonderfully with the flavors of the gorgonzola cheese.
  • Add Some Greens! To get even more nutrients, add some washed and trimmed arugula on top of the pizza. It will provide a burst of flavor and color.
  • Try Fresh Herbs: Sprinkle some fresh rosemary or thyme on top of the finished pizza. It's a beautiful way to enhance the flavors even more.
  • Use Different Cheese: If you aren't a fan of gorgonzola cheese, try feta cheese or goat cheese instead! Alternatively, you could try gouda or mozzarella, or omit the gorgonzola and use fontina cheese instead.
  • Try a Different Fruit: Apples slices, or even peaches would work well with this pizza!

Top Tips For Making Pear Gorgonzola Pizza

  • Slice the pears as thin as you can. That way, the flavor of the pears melts into the cheese and adds a creaminess to the pizza.
  • Watch your pizza to make sure it doesn't overcook. Typically 10 to 12 minutes is all you need for it to cook perfectly. With pre-made pizza dough, it can overcook quickly and then the dough becomes too crispy and tough.
  • Brushing the pizza dough with olive oil before adding the toppings and baking is critical to getting that golden brown crust!
