Peanut butter lovers rejoice – National Peanut Butter Day just passed us -January 24th… as if you needed another excuse to eat peanut butter!

George Washington Carver, the man whose research helped to create peanut butter, was also responsible for a large number of agricultural inventions that changed the industry. He earned his master’s degree at Iowa Agricultural College (Iowa State University) and became director of agriculture at Tuskeegee Institute in 1897. His crop rotation method caused him to be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1990. He also found 325 uses for the excess crop material after rotation, including peanut oil, and contributed to the invention of peanut butter.

Carver was born into slavery in 1864. He was taught to read and write by Susan Carver, one of his masters. He was always in pursuit of knowledge, traveling 10 miles to the nearest school every day. He applied to Highland College in Kansas but they rejected him because of his race, so he instead did research on his own. He also studied art and music in Simpson College. His skill in botanical drawings led to him enrolling in the botany program at Iowa Agricultural College.

Having lived in the South, he saw the damage that cotton was doing to the soil, especially since it was the only crop that was being planted year after year. He suggested alternating between peanuts and soybeans, and cotton, every year. This replaced the nitrates in the soil, leading to greater yields. His research into hundreds of uses for these new crops increased demand for them in the South.

He died on January 5, 1943 and his epitaph reads “He could have added fortune to fame, but caring for neither, he found happiness and honor in being helpful to the world.” In 1943, a monument to him erected on the plantation where he lived as a child became the first monument to an African-American.
