The global PC market grew 13% year over year, reaching 79.2 million units in the third quarter of 2020, according to Canalys. This is the biggest growth in the last 10 years, said the technology market analyst.
Deliveries had a weak first quarter, followed by a stronger second quarter that continued into the third quarter. Worldwide shipping of notebooks reached 64 million units with a stronger demand than that Covid-19 pandemic forced many employees to continue working from home. Shipments of laptops and mobile workstations grew 28.3% year over year. By contrast, desktops and desktop workstations saw shipments decrease by 26%.

Lenovo ranked first in the market with growth of 11.4% and shipments of more than 19 million. HP grew 11.9% and shipped 18.7 million units. Dell came in third after shipments were down 0.5% year over year. Apple and Acer finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with growth of 13.2% and 15%, respectively.
"The vendors, the supply chain and the channel have now had time to find their way around and allocate resources to deliver notebooks, which continue to see massive demand from both businesses and consumers," said Ishan Dutt, analyst at Canalys, in a press release .
"The enduring effects of this pandemic on the way people work, learn and collaborate will open significant opportunities for PC vendors in the years to come," added Rushabh Doshi, director of research at Canalys. "Although the focus for the past two quarters has been on commercial PC demand, consumer spending will be more fun for the PC market during the holiday season."
