At CES Panasonic gave a glimpse into their new 4K Blu-Ray player. The Blu-ray Disc Association is somewhat threatened by bandwidth chewing streaming services promising 4K, thus the announcement that Blu-ray would be going 4K. The prototype will be able to compress video twice as efficient as previous generations. But this process is depended on the processor so it will not be a simply OTA update to your existing unit. You will need new hardware. Netflix’s 4K looks just as good but if your area doesn’t have the bandwidth or you share yours with the rest of the household, a player upgrade might be the better choice.
