Paleo Breakfast Pizza

Editor’s Note: This post was originally published in January 2016 and has been updated for inclusion in our 30 Days of Breakfast Meals series.

Paleo Pizza Recipe & Breakfast Idea Overview

This unusual paleo pizza recipe is ideal if you want to enjoy a hot, paleo-friendly breakfast. You can add this to your arsenal of paleo diet breakfast ideas along with my delicious Paleo Coconut Porridge Recipe.  We are making an awesome pizza crust that is suitable for paleo eaters using sweet
potatoes, almond flour and herbs, then topping it with tomato sauce and various toppings such as mushrooms, ham or bacon, beef and bell pepper. Feel free to get creative and mix and match the toppings to your liking. We are using baking soda to help get the consistency right. Baking powder isn’t paleo-friendly but baking soda is fine.

You can add any other toppings you like. Cheese isn’t paleo but for those who are not strictly paleo may not mind having a little, or you might prefer to add artichoke hearts, green onions, fresh tomato slices, spinach, hot red pepper flakes, or even well-drained crushed pineapple.

This dish certainly makes a change from your usual steak and mushrooms, or scrambled egg with avocado, although it is particularly good for weekend brunch since it’s not a quick 5-minute recipe like you may want on a busy weekday morning.

Why not prepare the pizza crust the night before? That way, you can simply add your pre-cooked toppings and bake the pizza in the morning while you are making coffee. Your family will smell this in the oven and wander into the kitchen, wondering what the delicious aroma is!

Some Paleo Diet Breakfast Serving Ideas

One delicious idea is to have some sliced avocado and a fried or poached egg on top, to make this even heartier and definitely keep you full until lunchtime. Try some hot sauce on top too, and maybe cilantro, to add a south of the border touch. Eggs, bacon, mushrooms and ground beef feature in many breakfast recipes, but this recipe takes those ingredients to the next level and makes something extra-special.

Our paleo breakfast pizza recipe serves two or three people (maybe more if you are adding avocado and eggs to the plate) and any leftovers taste pretty good too if you want to make extra and take some to work for lunch the following day!

Ingredients:

3 medium sweet potatoes
3 1/2 oz almond flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
3/4 teaspoon dried oregano
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup unsweetened tomato sauce
4 sliced button mushrooms
2 oz shaved ham or crumbled cooked bacon (optional)
2 oz cooked ground beef
1 oz chopped green bell pepper

How To Make It:

Bring a pot of water to a boil. Peel the sweet potatoes and roughly chop them. Add them to the water and boil for 20 minutes or until tender. Now drain them and mash in a bowl. Put a cup of the mashed sweet potatoes in another bowl with the baking soda, almond flour, basil, oregano and salt, and knead well, using your hands, to make a dough. (Keep any leftover mash for a future recipe).

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a pizza pan or baking sheet with parchment paper and press the pizza dough out to make a large round, about half an inch thick. Bake it for 15 minutes or until golden brown on the edges.

Meanwhile you can prepare your toppings, cooking the ground beef and bacon if you haven’t already done so, and chopping the veggies. Take the pizza crust out of the oven and spread the tomato sauce over it. Add the mushrooms, ham or bacon, ground beef and green bell pepper on top, along with any other toppings you wish to add. Broil for a few minutes, then slice and serve hot.
