Painting with Acrylic on Watercolor Paper

By Abstractartbylt @artbylt

After finishing all the available canvases I had in the studio, I switched to watercolor paper.  This time I'm using an Arches hot pressed "satin" finish, which is very smooth.  The acrylic paint dries very fast on it, and I'm finding it a bit difficult to work with, even though I've painted on paper a lot in the past.

In any event, I'm using this as a time to experiment and let myself go in freer directions.  To begin, I tape the paper to pegboard with painter's tape, and put the pegboard on my easel so I can stand up to paint, which is how I like to do it.

I began working on this painting with a palette knife, beginning with cadmium yellow light, then cadmium red light, and then cobalt blue.  I scraped swaths of paint on the paper with the kinfe.

Next I painted the areas between the shapes with titanium white, picking up a bit of the other colors in the process.  My last step was to draw lines, first with parchment and then with each of the colors I'd already used.  My final lines were drawn with Paynes gray.
