Paint Color Trends for the 2013 Fall/Winter Season

By Simone Design Blog @HomeSpire

Fall is almost upon us and it’s time to think about changing the colors of our home decor from the bright bold colors of summer to warm outdoorsy colors of fall. Designers are often inspired by the outdoors when choosing the colors for paint, accessories, and furnishings. I’ve been researching the Fall/Winter 2013 trends by paint manufacturers and I’ve found a myriad of choices. I’m pleasantly surprised to see that Sherwin Williams has partnered with West Elm to come up with some really exciting and eye-catching colors for Fall/Winter 2013. They’re so modern and so chic. Names such as Indigo Batik and Quixotic Plum sound so exotic that you feel you have to take a look at these colors. I think many of these colors are here to stay.

To show you how some of these colors can work in your home for the season, I’ve put together a small collection of pictures highlighting them. If you are uncertain about using any of these as wall colors, you can easily incorporate them into your home as an accessory color. They’re easy to include in any existing design, and they can change the entire look and feel of a room.

How striking is this color on the wall, especially with the use of orange and brown in the furniture and accessories? It gives a nice fall/winter look to the bedroom and makes it feel very cozy.

Green is the quintessential outdoor color, no matter the season. It can be easily matched with a lot of other colors. If you’re a little uncertain about using it as a wall color, it’s perfect as a color for an accessory.

I think everyone has a love affair with blue.  Like green, it pairs beautifully with many colors. One of the advantages of blue is that it’s a year round color. Make it seasonal by swapping your accessories accordingly. In this room, an Oceanside-colored wall is paired with yellow accessories, peach furniture, a natural fiber floor rug, and Lucite dining chairs. The combination gives this room a casual yet sophisticated look.

What can brown do for your room? Whether you use brown on your walls or accessories, you can’t go wrong with it. The beauty of brown is that can be used as a complimentary accent to almost any color.

Gray can at times have a cold look compared to other neutrals (such as beige or tan). It’s a color that works well with wood, especially in kitchens. One way to up its appeal is to pair it with red, orange or yellow. In the kitchen below, the cabinetry glows with warmth from the pendant light, white walls and windows.

Plum exudes a warm, vibrant and luxurious feeling. It’s somewhere between purple and magenta, with a little red added to it. This color can be paired with olive green, chartreuse, marigold yellow, dark beige and gray. For a glamorous look, combine it with metallic gold.

Red is my color–I love it! It’s a mood enhancing color. So much has been written about red. During fall and winter, I love red on the front door of a house. If you paint your front door red, it will not only enhance your curb appeal, it will make you the talk of the neighborhood! Red, of course, can be used year-round. It’ll brighten up your front yard during the spring and summer as well.
