Police have arrested a total of 3,553 individuals over the island-wide May 9 violence, by August 22, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.
According to SSP Thalduwa, during the operations carried out on Sunday, August 21 alone, Police had arrested 31 people of which six suspects were remanded after being produced before the Courts.
Out of all the suspects arrested so far, 1,255 have been remanded while the others have been released on bail. Police arrested all these suspects based on 858 violence cases reported to the police from across the country.
The May 9 violence took place in response to the mob attack carried out by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna supporters at the MainaGoGama in Kollupitiya and GotaGoGama in Galle Face on the same morning. Several protestors were admitted to hospital following these mob attacks and a Parliamentarian and his PSO were killed at Nittambuwa after they were beaten by the angry protestors.
