Posted on the 23 February 2017 by Caz @LetsGoToTheMov7

Next up in the Oscar preview is looking at the performances which have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. This race has heated up a little bit over the past few weeks after everyone thought it was a clear run for Ali.

Remind yourself of the nominees and don’t forget to say who you want to win!

Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) Review

He must be in the film for about five minutes, ok maybe ten minutes. But we already know my feelings on the film so I won’t get into that. Don’t get me wrong Ali was very good in the brief scenes we got him for, I was left wanting more of his character but as we moved through the ages he quickly disappeared without a huge explanation just one small mention. Which was such a shame as such a good character which could have been developed a lot more, but that just wasn’t to be.

Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) Review

Yes, I might just be slightly biased with this one considering my love for not only the film but Jeff Bridges himself. He gets some fantastic lines and yes he might be doing something similar to what we have seen before from him, but let’s face it he is very damn good at it. He gets some cracking lines in this film and his delivery of them is just perfect. We all know that the Academy do love him as he is a previous winner and nominee.

Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) Review

While I ended up finding myself slightly underwhelmed by the film, the hype really did kill it! I was impressed the most by Hedges I thought his performance was very mature and real, managing to mix in some humor with the very serious moments. I was actually rather surprised to see him nominated in all honesty, as I just didn’t expect him to get enough credit.

Dev Patel (Lion) Review

I have to show a slight bias toward Patel right? He is flying the British flag for this category. He is very impressive in the film and shows a lot of emotion on-screen not bad from his start in Skins, I remember watching that right at the beginning! Anyway in recent weeks he has gained ground in the race due to picking up some awards on the circuit. In all honesty I think I would be happy seeing him win, due to the emotional story.

Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) Review

This one seemed to come as quite a surprise as thankfully Nocturnal Animals did not received much love from the Academy. A film I would extremely pretentious and did not enjoy at all. I can say though that Shannon was easily the best thing about the film, he really is something else as an actor and always manages to put in incredible performances. This one as no different as the cop trying to help solve the case.

Predictions
Who I want to win – Jeff Bridges
Who I think will win – Mahershala Ali
Outside chance – Dev Patel
