Oscars 2017 – Best Actress

Posted on the 24 February 2017 by Caz @LetsGoToTheMov7

The best actress race has been heating up and everyone thought it was easily Portman’s but Stone has been getting a lot of awards for her performance in La La Land so maybe not as straight forward as everyone first thought. Can you ever really count out Streep? The most nominated actress of all time?

Don’t forget to let me know who you would like to see win and who you think will win (if that is different of course).

Isabelle Huppert (Elle)

This film is not due for release in the UK until 10th March 2017.

Ruth Negga (Loving) Review

A slow burner of a film and what felt like a very reserved performance to go along with it from Negga. Taking on the role of a woman who is married to a white man and everything is against them. She gets in the torture to the character very well, I just felt it lacked the emotions towards the man who is her husband. I am trying not to be too negative but I really wasn’t impressed with this one at all, I thought we could have had someone else in this spot for a nomination instead of Negga.

Natalie Portman (Jackie) Review

A truly outstanding performance from Portman in a film that relies on her a hell of a lot. Main character and one of the only faces on screen most of the time. I thought that did help to show how powerful she was on screen. Having to really drive the film and make people care. My only thing about the film was I had hoped for more of Jackie’s life than we actually got. She was the early front runner for the award but now I guess its between her and Stone.

Emma Stone (La La Land) Review

I have been very interested in Stone’s career for many years now as I feel she is not afraid to take on different types of roles. She is different in everything and that is certainly the case in La La Land. Giving herself a chance to show off some singing and dancing. Plenty of moments alone on screen, showing how difficult it can be for young actresses in Hollywood. You have to wonder how much of that comes from personal experience. Her second nomination is a great achievement and she has to be the favourite to win this year.

It certainly wouldn’t be a year at the Oscars without an incredible performance from Streep being nominated. I was quite surprised that this film was not forgotten about considering it came out a long time before any awards buzz. I think the problem Streep has now is that some roles probably don’t get enough credit. I thought she as great in this film and throughly enjoyed everything about it. She mixes the drama and sadness with some hilarious moments as the wannabe Opera singer who cannot actually sing. Surely we can never really count her out of winning another award? Huge outside chance though.

Predictions
Who I want to win – Emma Stone
Who I think will win – Natalie Portman
Outside chance – Meryl Streep
