Always a very interesting award highlight the best leading performances by an actress if they have not been put into the supporting category! Honestly it happens every year, although before looking at each performance individually I will admit that I think this is a pretty poor year for who has been nominated for the leading role performances.
Cate Blanchett – Carol
A truly outstanding actress and surely one of the best of her generation who still gets plenty of roles to really show over and over again just how good she really is. Deserved this nomination as she totally blew me away in Carol, an inspiring performance. She sure is an Academy darling having already won two Oscars with another four nominations (including this one) I would be very happy to see her picking up another. Maybe Carol was released a little too early?
Brie Larson – Room
I wouldn’t say I disliked or liked Room it was powerful and awkward to watch at times, it does however annoy me all of the praise Larson is getting for it along with all of the other awards. She was nothing special in this film for me and didn’t really push the boundaries in the way it seems to have been reported. Jacob Trembley was the star of Room for me and Larson didn’t even come close to his level of performance.
Jennifer Lawrence – Joy
I must start by saying I am a huge fan of Lawrence and give all of her films a chance, she is something special. Joy however is not a special film or anywhere near her best performance, she does seem to be a new Academy darling. The film is a mess, don’t get me wrong Lawrence was easily the best thing about it but that was not enough to warrant this nomination in my opinion. I do love her though!
Charlotte Rampling – 45 Years
A tough time is had watching 45 years as it really is not a nice story in all honesty. Rampling was fantastic as the woman having to deal with her husband receiving some news from his past, another woman who he had been in love with. It is always nice to see a smaller less known film being represented in the acting side.
Saoirse Ronan – Brooklyn
I loved Brooklyn a lot. It was one of those films that came at just the perfect time to take my mind off well life and everything going on around me. I have never been a fan of Ronan and found her previous films and performances to be well a little strange and odd. She has won me over with this one though as she really does put in one hell of a performance. I wasn’t expecting her to get a nomination so that was very pleasing and I would be more than happy if she won, to give Brooklyn more credit and publicity if nothing else!
Who I want to win: Cate Blanchett
Who I think will win: Cate Blanchett . . . Ok that’s more of I hope it will most probably be Brie Larson (which annoys me)
Outside chance: Saoirse Ronan
